What Is Microneedling and What Does it Treat?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that stimulates your skin’s natural healing abilities to achieve smoother, healthier, glowing skin. The needles are used to carefully and strategically “damage” your skin, which sets off processes of regeneration that result in a refreshed appearance. The procedure is considered to be dermatological surgery.

How Is Microneedling Done?

The microneedling treatment may be performed using a hand-held device called a Dermaroller, which contains hundreds of tiny stainless-steel needles. The areas being treated may be marked to minimize the chance of causing pain and ensure you get the exact results you want.

The tiny perforations created by the dermaroller are called “micro-injuries”. The abrasions cause your skin to react and drastically increase collagen production and stimulate the generation of healing agents, such as elastin. The healing process takes over from there.

Before treatment, a numbing cream will be applied to your skin, which should minimize any potential pain resulting from the procedure. You may experience mild discomfort or minor bleeding if you opt for deeper needle penetration. The professional aesthetician at Amenity Day Spa will consult with you to determine the best pre-treatment for your microneedling treatments.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling may help resolve several common skin problems:

  • Wrinkles
  • Acne (unless it is actively breaking out)
  • Superficial scarring
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Stretch marks
  • Loose skin following dramatic weight loss or liposuction surgery
  • Alopecia (a condition that causes hair loss to the head and face)
  • Microneedling can also rejuvenate skin

What Parts of the Body Can Get Microneedling?

While most people get Microneedling on the face, the treatment is not exclusive to that part of the body. Microneedling can be used anywhere on the body needing a collagen boost – mainly where there are stretch marks: legs, chest, or butt.

Who Should Get Microneedling?

If you have well-defined outcome goals and treatable skin, you are a good candidate for Microneedling.

Individuals who are not good candidates might have one or more of the following issues:

  • Active acne
  • Active skin infection
  • Keloid scarring
  • Very sensitive skin
  • Open wounds
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Anyone receiving radiation therapy

Never treat over-active acne, rosacea, or other inflammatory conditions with Microneedling.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will You Need?

The number of treatments depends on your particular skin needs and desired outcome, but most people achieve their goals in 3-8 sessions. You should see the full results of your first Microneedling treatment within 2-4 weeks.

Each microneedling treatment should take 30 minutes or less to complete. With each session, the needles will be inserted deeper into your skin since the treated areas will get stronger and develop resistance. In most cases, multiple sessions are required, spaced a month apart.

When working with an aesthetician at Amenity Day Spa, we will create a custom skincare treatment plan and will review our recommendations with you. We may recommend combining the results with topical retinol or laser treatments to benefit or enhance the Microneedling results.
