BBL – BroadBand Light Therapy: Your Questions Answered

BroadBand Light Therapy (BBL®) is a relatively recent technique for improving the health and quality of the skin. Unlike similar methods, BBL is not a laser treatment. Instead, it uses regulated bursts and pulses of light to treat skin problems by penetrating past the surface to reach the deeper dermal layers, where the aging process begins.

BBL can treat most common skin problems but is also a powerful technology for rejuvenating skin to achieve a healthier and more youthful appearance. It is an outpatient procedure, virtually painless, and best of all, BBL can be used on any body part!

How does BBL work?

BBL focuses carefully modulated light pulses at the area requiring treatment, heat, and energy to destroy the targeted skin cells and surface-level blood vessels in that area are closed off. This process triggers the natural healing response in your skin, generating new cell growth and boosting collagen production.

What Is BBL Used For?

BBL is one of the most wide-ranging and versatile treatments available today. These are just some of the skin conditions BBL can minimize, improve or remove:

  • Scars
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Sunspots
  • Sun exposure
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Rosacea
  • Age spots
  • Spider veins
  • Loose or sagging skin
  • Hyperpigmentation

How Is BBL Done?

At your initial BBL consultation, a BBL technician/aesthetician will examine your skin, determine which areas to target, and then create a treatment plan that best suits your needs and aesthetic goals.

The treatment sessions typically last around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area receiving treatment.

At your sessions, the BBL technician/aesthetician will apply a cooling gel and possibly a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. You will be given safety shields, goggles, or glasses to protect your eyes during the procedure.

Is BBL Photofacial Painful?

BBL is not entirely pain-free. During the treatment, you will probably experience some discomfort – a sensation like tiny rubber bands being snapped against your skin – this effect is extremely brief and fades quickly. You may feel mild pain, but this will also pass quickly.

Following the treatment, you may experience some redness and swelling around the treated area for a few days, something like sunburn – this should not prevent you from applying makeup and going about your daily routine.

Is There Downtime Needed after a BBL Photofacial?

Strictly speaking, there isn’t any downtime associated with BBL. However, your doctor may suggest you comply with one or more of the following restrictions:

  • Avoid sun exposure or the tanning booth on the treated area for a minimum of 7-14 days following your treatment. – This is because the treated area will be more prone to sunburn and pigmentation darkening.
  • Keep the area covered and use a sunblock with a protection factor of 30+ to be reapplied every 2 hours.

How Long Until I See Results from BBL Treatment?

You should begin to see improvement in your skin’s treated areas in just a few days. Blemishes and “ruddy” patches will clear up within a few weeks.

BBL VS. IPL (Intense Pulse Light Therapy)

There is less pain and fewer side effects associated with BBL compared to IPL. On top of that, studies have indicated that BBL improves the skin’s overall health and can even slow and even stop the gene expression linked to visible aging.

How Often Do I Need BBL Treatment?

BBL is not a one-time treatment. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your needs and to meet your personal appearance goals – typically, four treatments a year are recommended.

The BBL technician/aesthetician will recommend how many BBL Photofacial treatments are necessary to meet your needs. This will be based on:

  • Your skin type
  • Your current skin condition(s)
  • Desired outcome

How Long Does It Take for Skin To Heal After BBL?

Immediately following your BBL treatment, brown patches or spots will appear darker and more pronounced – in 2-3 days, these areas will become even darker and probably feel scabby or scaly. But within 1-2 weeks, these areas will fall off and leave fresh, smooth, healthier skin behind.
